Back from the vault!! Sleeping Beauty!!!!!!!

OKLAHOMA CITY – When I executed the Epic Disney Watchfest last year, it was clear that one movie by far was the most gorgeous: Sleeping Beauty. Walt Disney nearly broke his studio producing the film, to great avail – his investment gave us a masterpiece for all time. As I wrote in my original review:

Despite the costly nature of inking, it also has a huge benefit. Namely, the art in this thing is luscious. There are fantastic character designs, rich sets, and incredibly detailed and beautiful outdoor landscapes. I specifically remember most of the scenes in the woods as standouts. In a nutshell, this movie makes me feel the same way I did during Avatar – I just can’t believe someone was able to make a movie so visually impactful.

Forsooth, SB is amazing. Add in the native widescreen presentation and it is a shoe-in purchase for any lovers of Disney, animation, cinematography, art or just lovers of fine aesthetics.

Problem is, before yesterday, a new copy of SB on blu-ray cost somewhere around $80, a handsome sum too steep for most average folks. Of course, you could get the film on DVD, but since blu-ray is the ultimate in hi-def visuals, and since these visuals are too good for a less-than-premium presentation, well…. buying it on DVD wasn’t an option.

That’s why I’m so glad to see that Disney has brought Sleeping Beauty out of the vault, making it available on blu-ray once again for the reasonable sum of $19.99. Also included are DVD and digital versions of the film.

All in all, I can’t think of anything to say except BUY IT. Disney is notorious for yanking films off the market, so snag a copy before they’re $80 again. Mayhap it would be the perfect Christmas gift?

Also, for you VHS-philes, thankfully there are somehow some copies of SB still available on VHS. Despite steady and universal economic inflation, this version of the film has defied all odds and stands available for purchase at prices lower than ever. Now’s your chance to make your dream come true and finally own this amazing film on the best home movie format of 1997!!!

Epic Disney Watchfest 18: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs & The Princess and the Frog: You Could Get Seventy-Seven Dwarfs And Kiss One Hundred Frogs And You STILL Wouldn’t Get A Better Review Than This

Well, here it is – the ultimate review of the Epic Disney Watchfest. It’s been real. Okay, enough sappiness – let’s get right to the reviews !!

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

936full-snow-white-and-the-seven-dwarfs-screenshotSomewhere along the way, I lost track of who I watched what movies with. However – I remember watching Snow White with Brazle, as it was right after church and no one else could come for some reason. Glad we could settle that. Anyways, it was awesome to watch the very first full-length hand-drawn feature film EVER. Continue reading

Epic Disney Watchfest 17: Pinocchio and Brother Bear: Even If You Wish Upon A Star You’ll Never Get A Better Review Than This

Here it is, the penultimate review of the Epic Disney Watchfest. I’m fired up – time to finish this out like a champ. On to the reviews!

Pinocchio

Pinocchio has multiplane technology.

The most common question I’ve gotten during the Watchfest is “What’s your favorite movie?” I love the question, but I have to admit, it’s tough to answer. Continue reading

Epic Disney Watchfest 16: Dumbo and Treasure Planet: A Review Of Two Movies With Names That Describe Each Other Quite Accurately

Guys, it’s time for the antepenultimate review of this Epic Disney Watchfest. I hope you’re as excited as I am – this thing has been profligately superlative, and it’s only going to get better. This review covers Dumbo and Treasure Planet, two movies of distinctly disparate qualities. Before I get to my thoughts, I want to ask you a favor. It occurs to me that some of you might’ve revisited some of these films after reading some of these reviews. If you have, I would love to hear from you, either in the comments below or in a personal email. You can tell me how much you loved the picture or how much you hated it. Or you can just share some good vibes and love for the Mouse Guys. No matter, I would love your feedback. Okay, on to the reviews!

Epic Disney Watchfest 15: Bambi and Lilo & Stitch: A Toutable Review If I Ever Read One

So, writing these Disney reviews is like running. Actually, I’m not a runner, so I think it’s like running. Specifically, I think it’s like endurance running. The endurance runners I know frequently talk about “the wall”, that invisible physical barrier that greets you anytime you’re going for a significant distance. They tell me that good endurance running isn’t avoiding the wall but pushing through it, continuing until your next wind or until you can go no longer move. Well, I hit “the wall” back on Sleeping Beauty. For some reason, that was the most brutal review of the bunch. Like, I normally knock these things out in about 3-4 hours – that one took about 8. Craziness!!! Still, I was able to push through, and I enjoyed a subsequent burst of energy which climaxed with Cinderella. But, I can feel the lactic acid building up and the high wearing off. The good news? With only three reviews left, I know the finish line is only a couple miles away. I can make it. I WILL make it. Uh oh – for some reason I just thought “Feel dee rhythm, feel da rhyme” from Cool Runnings. I think I’m getting delirious. On that note, time for some reviews!!

Bambi

Bambi is based on Bambi.

Bambi is a lovely movie about a baby deer’s mother getting killed by hunters. Continue reading

Epic Disney Watchfest 13: Alice in Wonderland and The Emperor’s New Groove: A Wondrous and Groovy Review

If you recall, Brazle and I set out to watch every one of Disney’s traditionally-animated movies between March 11 and April 1. We did it!! Last Thursday, Brazle, Hayley and I watched the last film of the project, The Princess and the Frog. It was a super fun ride. Now, the only thing left is to complete my reviews. No sweat.

Before launching into Alice in Wonderland and The Emperor’s New Groove, I have to say – these movies are polar opposites for me. Emperor’s is one of my favorites while Alice is…..well, I’m unlikely to ever watch Alice again. I feel like you should know that. Alright, review time!!!!!!!

Alice in Wonderland

Alice in Wonderland is bizarre.

I think Alice in Wonderland is really bizarre, so I decided to match its bizarreness by writing it a poem that might or might not have a meter. Here we go. Continue reading

Epic Disney Watchfest 12: Peter Pan and Tarzan: A Review That Will Never Grow Up and If It Does It Will Be A Gorilla

Epic Disney Watchfest 11: Lady and the Tramp & Mulan: The Pinnacle of Movie Reviews

If you are just joining us, please check out this page for info on what this is all about. My buddy Mattress commented recently that he would have to be paid a boatload of money to run through all these Disney movies like I’m doing. I said, “Why do you think I’m doing it???” and then admitted there was actually no boatload of cash. In reality, this process has been pretty crazy but also really fun. I mean, I’ve never watched 35 movies in 20 days. It’s zany and awesome. So zany and awesome, in fact, that I’m already looking for others similar undertakings to undertake. But, despite the ultra-amazingness that is this Epic Disney Watchfest, I can’t help but think that a moment will come where I can’t watch another single traditionally-animated film. It hasn’t quite happened yet, and that’s probably because we’re hitting the stretch of absolute Disney classics. But still, I feel like another shoe is going to drop any day now. We shall see. As things stand, it has been a really enjoyable ride, and I’m glad you’ve joined in with me. On to the reviews!!

Lady and the Tramp

Ok people, your wait is over. The votes are in, and it’s clear you feel that I haven’t made enough wacky analogies in this film review series. Well, I intend to fix that right now. Continue reading
